Initially enthusiastic about the idea, one might send a complimentary necklace with jewelry orders or similar tokens of appreciation for years, just as I did. But when analysis reveals no shift in the volume of five-star reviews, the question arises: Does a free gift indeed encourage higher feedback ratings? Evidently not, since data indicates no correlation between these seemingly generous acts and customer reviews. Additionally, the complication of handling damages or loss of these gifts could ultimately result in higher costs rather than enhanced value for your business.
So when should you consider sending a gift? My golden rule revolves around the nature of your product; specifically, if it's consumable—think bath and body products or anything with a definitive usage span. Here, a sample could become a strategic marketing tool, not aimed at bolstering feedback but to nurture repeat business and introduce customers to a wider array of your products, potentially increasing their average transaction value.
However, non-consumable items like jewelry, art, or greeting cards, stand differently. Additional unsolicited items may not only cause confusion but also carry the risk of unintentionally devaluing your brand by suggesting a lower cost of production and therefore a lower perceived value. For non-consumable purchases, it's typically best to allow your primary product to shine on its own merit.
Well-established luxury brands like Tiffany & Co. or Pandora don't routinely include free gifts—with occasional promotional exceptions—since it could evoke consumer skepticism about production costs and value. On the flip side, skincare brands such as Clarins or Clinique do provide samples to entice future purchases. That said, whichever strategy you opt for should align with your brand's identity and perceived value in the marketplace.
Whether to send a free gift with your Etsy orders should not be a blanket strategy but a selective approach, tailored to your brand and product type. For consumables, it can be an effective strategy to boost customer loyalty and average transaction value. Non-consumable goods, however, may not derive the same benefit. Evaluate your business model to decide what adds true value to your customer's experience, and let that inform your decision.
